Developer Diary – Astral Allod Creation!

Friday, April 26 2013 - 6:46 AM
by piopico

Hello Sarnautians,

“Allods Online” is a game that is constantly evolving. But there can be no development without adding a lot of new content that fills and spreads through the whole game world. That is why the Allods’ Team never ceases the creation process. And now, thanks to the Developer Diary, we are able to showcase how new content is imagined and created by this amazing team!

Let us present to you the latest entry of the Developer Diary: the Astral Allod creation!

In this article I’m going to tell you how I build Astral Islands. By the way, a brand new one is set to to appear in the game pretty soon.

Allods Online Developer Diary: Astral Allod Creation

It all starts with a concept

I always store a few ideas of how I think new islands should look. They come into my head in the course of my everyday life: on my way to work or during my vacations with friends. While reading a book or watching a movie, I collect my greatest impressions to incorporate them into my future creations. The tiniest things may inspire me, whether it be an interesting story or a bright visual image that sets an atmosphere.

For example, the concept for one of the islands was born by mixing up two images: a June city lost in the jungle and snowy mountains with a temple. And so the allod appeared: an ancient city in a frozen jungle.

Allods Online Developer Diary: Astral Allod Creation

During the pre-production stage I pick my favourite idea and start developing it. This produces the Reference: a very important component, a connection between allod elements and the real experience of a player. When in the game, players meet things they have come across before, and these allusions to something already known brings positive emotions, making them believe in whatever is on the screen.

The Reference helps bring a story from real life into our game world. Our Emerald Isle is a recognizable allusion to the Wizard of Oz, that is so familiar since childhood. The game gives a wonderfull opportunity to follow in Alla’s footsteps along the Yellow Brick Road and meet Tin Woodman, Scarecrow and Lion who turn into hostile and dangerous bosses under the influence of Mysterious Astral.

After the concept of the island is decided, I begin to work it through and expand on its background. This is a very creative process that is a lot of fun. I put down detailed chronicles of the events and describe the zones on the island.

This stage involves the Scriptwriter. We strive to make a deep and fascinating storyline. The story is important, for all the details such as mobs and bosses, scripted events and NPCs, will deeply support it. We decide what places players will visit on the island and what and who they are going to see there. This will help with the further design of the monsters, bosses and topology.

Look before you leap

When the storyline is finished, we can get down to the topology. I use a special Map Editor to make a rough draft of the island. Since I am going to make a city-like island, I have to lay the main road, a big temple, a couple of city squares and a huge portal at the end of the island – its landmark.

A landmark is a unique object that serves as a reference point and is often noted by the players. There is such a mark on every island, like the Mana Station in Zone 51.

Allods Online Developer Diary: Astral Allod Creation

Landmark: Huge June Portal

When the draft is ready, I focus my attention on the details: I place small and medium objects (trees and buildings). In case of the Icy Isle these were mountains and hills. But all this is still a draft! It still requires a little more work.

After my draft of the island has been accepted, the time comes to switch to designing Bosses and Mobs. Here the background of the island helps a lot, for the mob hierarchy was created at that stage. I want to give unique abilities to all the mobs and bosses to bring new challenges to the island. Now players will not resort to a “button mash” strategy and will have to invent some new tactics to fight these enemies.

I assign some unusual mechanics to one of the optional bosses, such as the Cayman on a beautiful Koch-Itzmahl Island.

Allods Online Developer Diary: Astral Allod Creation

On my island I created a golem who throws enormous fireballs, so players have to run about all the time to avoid them. If players manage to defeat the boss quickly, it gives them bonus damage and healing for easier exploration of the island.

I invent special abilities for mob packs to stimulate the players to think harder, plan more accurately and work as a team. There is usually one of the mobs that increases the others’ damage, controls or weakens the players or casts area of effect spells upon death. It isn’t always for the best, however. My experience shows that players may sometimes misunderstand the mechanics, so they should always be crystal clear to them!

Strike while the iron is hot

After the design is completed, a new stage of production begins. This is the time for all the ideas to come to life. When my design gets the green light, I start working on the detailing of the map and the mechanics implementation. I can assign special tasks to programmers in case I need any new game mechanics introduced (e.g. mechanics for The Poison Wing).

Pretty often, when standard mobs are not enough to fill the island, I ask designers to create some brand new ones. My favorite demands are often connected with the final epic boss, like the one in Zone 51. This time is not an exception! There will be a totally unique last boss and a unique place to fight him.

Allods Online Developer Diary: Astral Allod Creation

During the final stage I spend a lot of time with the artists. Together we adjust the lighting and choose colour shades. The artists produce concept art of the new objects, locations and creatures. Here is the concept for the Island’s final boss:

Allods Online Developer Diary: Astral Allod Creation

To develop mechanics I use special editors that help tune mobs and bosses just as I wish. I set their abilities and script their behavior that can be corrected during the numerous playtests to come. Another important thing is the visual appearance of monsters’ spells and abilities. That is how it all looks in the editor:

Allods Online Developer Diary: Astral Allod Creation

Finaly the island is ready for the Playtest. It means that all the work of the designers, artists and scriptwriters has ended. The island is filled with decorations, scripted scenes, monsters, NPCs and even some easter eggs!

I test the island personaly a few times. Then we gather a group of people who have worked on the island and play together. We mark all the good and bad things, think of suggestions on how to improve on the bad or alter the gameplay and mechanics. But the last word always belongs to the creator of the Island’s concept. When we finish, the island goes to QA Team for bug testing.

The creation of an Astral Island is a fascinating and exciting process. It requires a great deal of inspiration and imagination because this all is in the hands of one person. This is such a good opportunity to create an adventure of your own and share it with other players. I enjoy reading the Allods Online forums; particularly threads where the players discuss Astral islands, including mine. The comments are a very valuable resource for our team. They help make Allods Online better and more enjoyable. Travel through the Astral and share your impressions, discuss your ideas and thoughts as all of them can find their future in the Astral!

Have Fun!

Lords of Destiny – A Closer Look at the Crystal Palace!

Wednesday, February 27 2013 - 9:42 AM
by piopico

Hello Sarnautians,

Welcome to one of our new guides which showcase the new features of Lords Of Destiny. We have already travelled across the stunning island of the Pearl Ring and met the cute Tequani. At the end of our journey we have spotted a strange building, the Crystal Palace, protected by an invisible barrier. We have left that tropical paradise wondering what’s hidden inside those impenetrable walls.

Both Yasker and Aidenus have been informed and they have summoned the Historians because they want to know more about this mystery.
It is time to investigate about the Tequani and the strange Crystal Palace!

Let’s leave the cold behind and let’s head back to the Pearl Ring, well everybody deserves a bit of sun and pristine waters after all!

During our first visit, we have discovered that the Junes arrived in Tequatl and lived side by side with this peaceful people until the Curse hit them. They tried to pass their knowledge to their new friends, but they had soon realised the gap between their cultures was too big. They started to simply live together, with the Junes taking care of the simple needs of the little creatures. When the Curse caused the fall of their civilization, the Junes decided to protect their friends, ensuring the survival of Tequatl.

But a dark age started for them: they were alone again and they had to learn again how to take care of themselves, since their protectors were gone. They had to learn from what they had seen from the Ancestors: it was not easy, but their civilization is an ancient one and they adapted and survived. The Junes eventually became gods in their minds.

After the fall of the Junes, Tequani’s misery grew bigger and bigger, until also the Jumayo River dried up. It seems that only a few traces of this story remain in their memory, including a few statues. Since it is your duty to investigate, you discover that a crocodile god appeared, bringing back water and life to these people.

Something’s wrong in the puzzle… Tequani don’t remember about their history and their gods, all they talk about are those Immortals. Your journey in the Astral was interrupted by a strange anomaly and the scientists of your faction have discovered the existence of a mysterious paradox… Maybe things are not what they seem, but who would be so powerful to create such a rupture in the Astral and to support such paradox? A single name pops in your mind… Tep!

There is no time to lose, your faction leader counts on you, and you are a brave soldier: you need to discover more about these “Immortals” worshiped by the Tequani and unravel the mystery of the Crystal Palace, find a way to go through the Veil of Paradox that protects it. If it is Tep who is behind all of this, you need to find a way to undermine his power, quickly!

You have finally found a way to break the Veil and to gain access to the Crystal Palace. But it won’t be so easy, you need to defeat the Crystal Guards!

Welcome to the Crystal Palace! Our developers have created a mighty building, please make yourselves at home and defeat all the enemies!

As Swen used to say after discovering Astral travels, “That’s a small step for a Gibberling, one giant leap for Sarnaut”. It will bring you closer to the solution of the paradox you are trapped into, although the truth you will discover won’t be an easy one for the Tekyans… But you have to discover it by yourself, we won’t reveal anything more to you: all we can’t say is that you will look at the stunning Pearl Ring with different eyes!

That’s the end for today’s focus on Tekyans and Crystal Palace, we hope it has motivated you and that you can’t wait to discover the hidden secret of this instance!

We, veterans, are aware how complex building your perfect warrior can be and how little details may have an impact on a defeat or a victory on the battlefield.

We already took necessary countermeasures implementing a new system to your skills and rubies grid. You will notice some skills and rubies are marked with stars. Those are officially recommended for your class. You can still do things your own way, but unless you’re a veteran yourself, it is wise to follow the recommended path created by the best strategists of Sarnaut.

Now that incoming changes are no secret, you are ready to plan strategies for your future build and win wars staying ahead for your enemies! Don’t miss other useful guides in following days so nobody and nothing can take you by surprise.

Lords of Destiny – A Closer Look at the New Zones!

Friday, February 08 2013 - 10:55 AM
by piopico

Ahoy Astral Captains!

Today we start a journey into the new content coming soon with the next update Allods Online: Lords of Destiny! Welcome to the first preview of many more previews to come leading up to the exciting update!

We would like to first introduce a new Sarnautian race, the Tequanis. It is now time to set sail towards their lands and to discover more about this ancient and mysterious people!

Your faction leader will send you there on a secret mission, but beware! Astral demons are always lurking in the darkness, waiting for ships to attack! You will be far away from home in the unknown Astral, but don’t worry, it doesn’t happen so often to leave a demon behind and to find a tropical paradise at the end of a wormhole!

Deep in the Astral, a forgotten archipelago awaits to be explored. Its name, Pearl Ring, has been lost for centuries and the way to reach it as just been retrieved. It is part of a bigger allod called Irdrih, which is as wide as Holy Land, Eljune and Coba Plateau put together.

Welcome to the Jungle!

Disembark your ship and, while you are still trying to put all the pieces together, you will start to explore a tropical jungle with stunning landscapes and many different types of wildlife. Be careful though: not all these cute animals will be friendly, many of them are fierce enemies!

One of the first inhabitants you will have the chance to meet are the Aviaks. At your arrival in the area, you will discover soon that this tropical paradise is shaken by a war between two different factions of Aviaks. When you find yourself alone, far away from home, one of the first things to do is find some allies: fly on the back of the colorful Squawkers to discover the islands while helping your new Aviaks friends!

Discover the amazing flora and fauna of this tropical map, take part in an arcane ritual, and challenge the natural elements to gain the respect of the Wind people!

The landscape of the Pearl Ring map is stunning. Dive into the clear waters to discover a colorful underwater environment with many mysteries to unravel.

Do you remember the days when you had been sent to the Holy Land with an important quest? Here you will find an element to bring back your memories. We’re not only talking about PvP, but about Sites of Power! Honor your faction in this remote corner of the Astral and conquer sites of power to unlock buffs for all the comrades of your faction!

Pearl Ring is a round reef that encircles an archipelago of xx small islands with a bigger one at its center. After having explored the smaller islands, it is now the time to venture into the main one.

If you delve deeper into the secrets of Irdrich and uncover plots of powerful forces, you might be lucky and find a way to the beautiful Tequatl!

Tequatl

Tekyans are an ancient race, mentioned in the June chronicles that survived the Great Cataclysm and lost for ages when Sarnaut was torn into pieces. But, as Historians always reminds us, sometimes lost things might be recovered!

Before the Great Cataclysm, the Tequanis, which are furry little creatures and distant relatives of the Gibberlings, used to be a savage people that inhabited the jungle in Irdrich. Due to the remoteness of their land, they had never met other rational beings before.

When Irdrich was colonized by the Junes around the 1800 year of the Old Era, those little creatures were impressed by the spells and the abilities of the new comers and soon gained their favors offering them generous gifts. Soon, both races began to live side by side and the colonists turned into patient teachers, trying to pass the Tequani their knowledge and culture. The little creatures lived without concerns and the Junes provided to their needs until the Curse destroyed their civilization and Sarnaut was shattered into pieces.

Before meeting their fate, the Junes made sure their furry friends survived, but the Tequani were left on their own and the world forgot about them until now. The Junes became gods in their minds and the Tequani had to put in practice what they had learned from their protectors and take care of themselves.

They eventually built their civilization and managed to establish their own traditions and school of magic. Today, the Tequani still live in harmony with nature and build their houses under the trees.

Do not be fooled by their fluffy appearance though! Although they are kind-hearted and friendly, some of them might be hostile while they protect their settlement. Keep that in mind while taking the path towards their village!

The beauty of their land will leave you speechless and ease your homesickness. Explore their village and talk to them and you’ll discover more abou their culture and their secrets. After the fall of June civilization, new gods has replaced the Ancient protectors. Who are those “Immortals”, as Tequanis call them, and what is hidden in their beautiful Crystal Palace?

The more you will discover about this stunning land, the closer you will get to a bitter revelation: how could such beauty and innocence have been spared by destruction? Maybe there is another side of Irdrich to discover, more to see, but it is not time to unveil it yet…

Make sure to check our Official Website for our next Lords of Destiny preview!

[EVENT] It’s Time to Celebrate Plam!

Friday, February 08 2013 - 10:40 AM
by piopico

Each of the Twelve Martyrs are great in their own way as they fill their chosen ones with blessings to help them on their journeys through Sarnaut. We use their protective abilities, they help us regenerate after a long, hard battle and they offer guidance to those who seek it. So let’s celebrate them individually! Each Patron should have their own designated holiday in which their worshipers can benefit of their blessing and offer up even more prayer to the great Martyrs!

From the Saturday, February 9th until Saturday, March 9th, all those born under the sign of Plam will celebrate their patron and receive their blessings for 20 days!

For those of you asleep during history classes in Nezebgrad and Novograd, here’s a brief overview of the Great Martyrs:

Men and women on these allods are never alone. They are protected by the blessing of a mysterious set of powers, called the Great Martyrs.

Shortly after the Great Cataclysm, the Magi began to notice strange events of the original magic. Although their appearance seemed to coincide with the Astral invasion, their precise nature remained a mystery for many years. While the Astral was known to have a magical influence on Allods and all their inhabitants, 12 special magical auras were discovered, each with unique properties and characteristics.

Over the centuries, experiments were conducted on these forces. It was discovered that each inhabitant of Allods could perform a ritual to seek protection from one of these magical auras, but for a long time the nature and origin remain shrouded in mystery.

So what better way to celebrate a patron than by praying to it extra hard during it’s holiday season? That doesn’t mean we want you to rush out to the Deserted Farm on a one man mission to end up in purgatory for a 24 hour period! We want you to fight with honor and courage, slay as many enemies as possible, and give thanks to Plam afterwards!

How can you take advantage of these benefits? Just log-in to your character with Plam’s symbol, and enjoy the FREE 20 days blessing! Easy as that!

Great news for all who wish to give thanks to their patron! Celebrate the adventures they’ve already had and look towards those that are to come! The Festival of Plam runs from Saturday, February 9th until Saturday, March 8th – don’t miss out!
